Finding the right fabric for yourself is already a challenging process in itself. Its texture, usage area, and quality can make the selection process tiring and confusing. At the same time, choosing the right fabric is not just about these; you also need to consider the fabric’s weight. Fabric weight directly affects the fabric’s durability, comfort, and how it feels on you.

Why is GSM Important in Textile?

GSM (grams per square meter) expresses the weight of the fabric. GSM, which is very important in textile products, determines the weight of the fabric.Since the fabrics are used in different places, their thickness, density and weight are very important for design and production.

Does GSM Determine Fabric Quality?

No, GSM does not determine the quality of a fabric. It only indicates the weight and density of the fabric. However, it helps provide insight into the intended use or application of the fabric.

GSM RANGE FABRIC PROPERTY COMMON USING AREAS
30–80 GSM Light and thin Lightweight shirts, linings, tulle
100–160 GSM Medium-light Summer dresses, t-shirts
160–250 GSM Medium thickness Sweatshirts, hoodies
250–400 GSM Thick and heavy Jackets, winter clothing
400+ GSM Very thick and stiff Carpets, felts

How Is GSM Measured?

GSM refers to the weight in grams of a ne-square-meter piece of fabric.

Steps to measure GSM:

  • Cut a fabric piece of 100 cm² (e.g., 10 cm x 10 cm).
  • Weigh it using a precision scale.
  • Multiply the measured weight by 100 to calculate the GSM.

GSM = GRAM / METER

*10 cm x 10 cm fabric piece = 100 m²

If weighs 1,3 gram

GSM= 1,3/100x10= 130 GSM
